Warning: somber realization ahead
So I do the purchasing for my company. One of my duties is buying the flags. I also share the duty of raising and lowering with one or two other people. There was a presidential proclamation for flags at half staff so out I go. Once I was done I thought to myself “didn’t I just do this?”
Viper I saw at Run to the Sun a few months ago for your time.

I was thinking we should just double the height of all flag poles, but not extend the line.
That way, we would never have to lower it to half-mast. That’s as high as it would go. :(

Unfortunately it doesn’t show any signs of decreasing any time soon. Looking at the figures, last year had about as many mass shootings in the U.S. as there was days in the year. I was looking at some of the figures released in February 2016. It was shocking.

Why not make half mast the default position?

Yeah it's a sad state of affairs. What's interesting is violent crime is down overall. So the country isn't as violent as it was 20 years ago, but it seems the kind of violence perpetrated is changing.

I think this is the key point. There is less of it, but some of that reduced amount is worse than previously seen.
Basically, people have a way of constantly outdoing themselves. Both in the good way (technology advances, sportsing records, etc) and in the bad way (violence, crime, etc).

Why does your company have flags? Just curious.

I don't have an honest answer to that question. Maybe to showcase our international roots? We're the North American headquarters of a German company. In this area of South Carolina that's kind of a big deal maybe.

Wow! Odd that they’d do that. I think it’s an American thing. I’m in Australia and very few houses/buildings have Australian flags.

Because we can’t seem to get out of half.

Oh I see what you mean. American flags are literally everywhere. Very common to have one mounted on your house in some fashion.
